In brief

A VAT invoice is an invoice used in a value-added tax system to record a supply and associated VAT information. The applicable country determines registration, timing, fields and treatment.

A VAT invoice is an invoice used in a value-added tax system. It records the commercial transaction and, where applicable, VAT details for the supply. VAT systems are jurisdiction-specific: the fields, timing, language, currency and tax treatment are not identical everywhere.

Common information to review

Official VAT guidance may address the supplier’s identity and registration number, customer details, invoice number, issue or supply date, description, quantities, prices, discounts, VAT rate, VAT amount and total. A simplified or special-case invoice may be treated differently. This list is an orientation, not a compliance checklist.

Do not assume VAT applies

Whether VAT should be charged can depend on registration, customer status, supply type, place and time of supply, exemptions, zero-rating or other rules. Do not select a rate because a country name appears in a tool. The rate on the calculator is supplied by the user and is not verified against current law.

Use the relevant official source

  • United Kingdom: HMRC’s VAT guide explains VAT invoice information and how the local system treats invoice details.
  • United Arab Emirates: the Federal Tax Authority publishes VAT guidance on tax invoices. UAE-specific requirements should not be copied to another country.

For transactions elsewhere, consult that jurisdiction’s own tax authority. The official references below were checked on 7 October 2026; this generic page does not replace current local guidance or professional advice.

Prepare and review the document

  1. Choose the country profile that fits the invoice workflow, but verify the tax position independently.
  2. Use the correct supplier/customer details and transaction description.
  3. Enter only the tax treatment and rate you have determined apply.
  4. Check the tax amount, currency, invoice date and totals.
  5. Confirm any required electronic-invoice process or extra statement with official guidance.

Use the VAT calculator for arithmetic with a rate you enter, or open the UK or UAE invoice generator. A tax invoice template is only a starting layout.

Frequently asked questions

Is the VAT rate the same in every country?

No. VAT rates and tax treatment are set by individual jurisdictions and can vary by supply and circumstance. The calculator offers official rate presets for reference and does not verify which rate applies to your transaction.

Does a VAT invoice have the same fields in the UK and UAE?

The systems have separate rules and official guidance. Do not assume a field list or format from one jurisdiction automatically applies to the other.
